Hawaii: Is Maui right for you?

When you think Hawaii, you think beaches, Mai Tais, and surfing, right? But Hawaii is sooo much more than that, which is why it can be a bit daunting to narrow it down to ensure you're picking the right island that will have all you're looking for in a tropical getaway tailored to you. You've looked at your calendar, submitted your PTO, and Googled the flights so you know what to expect, but how are you supposed to know which island to go to if you've never been before?!

Not to worry, I've been to Maui and I'm here to help! By the end of this, you'll be one step closer, a lot more knowledgeable, and fully ready to click "purchase" on that flight to paradise!

The first thing you want to do is think about how YOU like to vacation. Do you prefer sitting on the beach and reading a book while relaxing? What about waking before sunrise to hike your way up to some amazing views? How are you with water sports like snorkeling or surfing? Are you a history buff who loves to learn and soak in the culture? The Hawaiian islands have a little bit of everything for everyone, but it's important to narrow down what's most important to you before choosing which location will be your home away from home for a week (or two!).

Of the 8 islands that make up the 50th state, 6 are open to visitors. Let's learn a bit about one of the most popular islands, shall we?

Maui, the second-largest island, and voted "best beach in the world" by Condé Nast Travel Readers, is nothing short of breathtaking. On Maui, you'll find the perfect beaches for swimming in crystal clear waters. Kaanapali Beach is home to thousands of colorful, tropical fish and is the ultimate snorkel spot, or you can hone your surfing skills in the calm waters along the coast. Another option is to head to the northwest coast of Maui to experience Honolua Bay, another fun spot for viewing vibrant marine life. If you'd prefer hiking, you're in for a treat! I highly suggest setting the alarm early and have your coffee pot timer set so you can make an early start before heading on the Haleakalā Crater hike. On the 4-mile round-trip hike, you'll enjoy unique volcanic landscapes with insta-worthy views! The only hard part will be deciding which pictures to have framed when you get home.

If chasing waterfalls is your thing, you MUST take a drive along the Road to Hana, the 64.4-mile-long stretch of Hawaii, which connects Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Maui Revealed by Andrew Doughty (not an ad, I just swear by it!) so you don't miss any hidden gems along the way. The book will uncover many must-see places in Maui, like the black and red sand beaches, and it also gives directions for some can't-miss spots along the road. With those handy tidbits of info, you'll be living your best life in no time!

Last, but certainly not least, if you're in the mood to relive your childhood dream of becoming a marine biologist, you can check out a whale-watching tour! There's nothing quite like seeing one of the ocean's largest mammals in the wild. Your best shot at seeing whales is December through May, so plan accordingly if that's your main goal.

After a long day of activities, soaking up the sun and breathing the salt air, you've gotta eat, right?! I cannot properly convey how delicious the food at Mama's Fish House is! 10/10 would recommend, so be sure to book your reservation early and I suggest getting there in the late evening before sunset.

You can't go wrong with a trip to Maui! Be sure to let me know if you decide to go - I want to hear about all your favorite spots!

Hello, fellow gypsy soul!

I'm thrilled to meet you! I'm just your average, never-married, childless, middle-aged woman with a passion to see as much of this world as I can before I die!

For now, I'm splitting my time between SUV-living and touring the U.S. with my geriatric dog, Fritz, and spending time with family in Texas when not on the road.

I've been very blessed and have traveled to many places internationally and domestically and I'd love for you to follow along on my adventures. I'm happy to share with you the beautiful places I see, fun things I do, the most delicious places I eat, and any hacks I learn along the way!

Thanks for stopping by and we'll see ya on the road!

- Stacy
